Bromocriptine mesilate
Indications/Uses
Improves glycemic control in adult w/ type 2 DM.
Dosage/Direction for Use
1.6-4.8 mg once daily w/in 2 hr after waking up in the morning. Initiate at 1 tab (0.8 mg) & increased by 1 tab wkly. Max daily dose: 6 tab (4.8 mg). Max tolerated number of tab: Between 2 & 6 tab/day.
Administration
Should be taken with food: May be taken w/ food to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to bromocriptine or ergot-related drugs. Patients w/ syncopal migraine. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Can cause orthostatic hypotension & syncope. May exacerbate psychotic disorders or reduce effectiveness of drugs for psychosis. Concomitant use w/ dopamine antagonists eg, neuroleptic agents. Somnolence; may impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, fatigue, dizziness, vomiting, & headache.
Drug Interactions
Mutual diminished effects w/ neuroleptic agents. May increase the unbound fraction of highly protein-bound therapies. May increase ergot-related side effects or reduce ergot effectiveness for migraine if co-administered w/in 6 hr of ergot-related drugs. Use caution in co-administration w/ strong inhibitors, inducers, or substrates for CYP3A4.
